What defines handwriting?

First and foremost, it’s the many irregularities—whether in the uneven strokes, the inconsistency in the shape of the letters, or the fact that the letters aren’t perfectly aligned on the line. On top of that, when writing, people generally tend to connect certain letters.

But for all of this to be implemented in a computer font is more than unusual.

And yet Ingo’s Marker Hand is convincing with all these characteristic handwritten features.

Multiple alternative forms for all numbers and letters, plus hundreds of letter connections (ligatures) and a few built-in surprises make this font a perfect imitation of personal handwriting.

Like its counterpart, the “Biró Script” written with a ballpoint pen, “Ingo’s Marker Hand” is written freely. However, the writing instrument used was a so-called ‘marker’, a thick felt-tip pen with a rectangular tip, and the writing surface was a smooth whiteboard.

Naturally, under such conditions one writes much larger than with a ballpoint pen on paper, which has significantly influenced the expression of the script.

Also, the pen I used was no longer brand new, and so some details became more or less blurry or unclear.

The thick tool also meant that more delicate shapes, such as a small ‘e’ or ‘o’, often melted together into a smudge.

However, both these ‘errors’ only serve to further enhance the hand-drawn feel.

All of this is made technically possible by several OpenType features integrated into the font, which can be enabled or disabled in the respective application.
