Wer schreibt heute noch von Hand? Und wer schreibt dann auch noch schön? Was macht überhaupt eine schöne Handschrift aus?
Typisch für Druckschriften ist die Gleichförmigkeit ihrer Buchstaben. Während übliche (Schön-) Schreibschriften diese Regelmässigkeit ebenfalls anstreben, lebt eine persönliche Handschrift gerade von der Unregelmässigkeit ganz individueller Formen. Ein e ist eben nicht immer gleich, sondern abhängig vom Buchstabe davor oder danach, kann, ja muss es sehr unterschiedlich aussehen.
Wollte man einst aus einer Schreibschrift eine Satzschrift erstellen, mussten diese Unregelmässigkeiten umgangen werden, indem man Formen fand, die immer eine Verbindung zum benachbarten Buchstaben ermöglichen. Daher der unnatürlich sterile Charakter der »Schönschreib-Schriften«, die uns heute als Satzschriften zur Verfügung stehen. Dabei ist es eigentlich ein Leichtes, mit Hilfe von Ligaturen entsprechend abwechslungsreiche Buchstaben-Verbindungen in einer Schrift bereitzustellen.
Aber erst mit Einführung des OpenType Font-Formats ist es möglich, ausreichend viele Ligaturen und Alternativformen in einen Font einzubetten und diese auch auf einfache Art und Weise anwendbar zu machen.
In der Marleen Script sind fast 100 Alternativformen zu einzelnen Buchstaben und über 400 Ligaturen enthalten.
Damit ist es endlich möglich, mit einer Satzschrift die Wirkung einer echten Handschrift überzeugend zu simulieren. |
Who still writes by hand? And who still writes nicely? What constitutes beautiful handwriting anyway?
Printed scripts typically display uniform characters. Whereas normal calligraphy attempts to achieve this regularity as well, a personal handwriting style indeed lives from the irregularity of completely individual forms. An e is just not always the same, but can or must look very different depending on the letter which precedes or follows it.
Whenever an attempt was made to produce a typeface from calligraphy, these irregularities had to be dealt with in such a way that forms were discovered which always made a connection possible with the neighboring letters. That's why we have the unnaturally sterile characters of calligraphies which are available today as "calligraphy scripts." With the help of ligatures, it is actually quite easy to come up with varied letter combinations in a typeface. But only with the introduction of the OpenType font formats is it possible to embed an adequate amount of ligatures and stylistic alternates in a font and to apply them in a simple manner.
In Marleen Script nearly 100 stylistic alternates for individual letters and more than 400 ligatures are included.
With these options it is finally possible to convincingly simulate the effect of true handwriting with a typeface. |

Auf diese Weise wiederholen sich die einzelnen Zeichen nur sehr selten, da sie ja meistens durch eine Ligatur ersetzt werden. Ein in der Marleen Script gesetzter Text sieht dann einem wirklich mit Bleistift handgeschriebenen Text nahezu täuschend ähnlich.
Die Zeichen der Marlen Script sind bewusst unsauber und unregelmäßig digitalisiert. Zu vielen Buchstaben gibt es alternative Formen, zum Teil sogar mehrere verschiedene zur Auswahl, um ein maximal lebendiges Schriftbild zu erzielen. |
So, the form of the single character seldom repeats itself since it is mostly replaced with a ligature; and, with each combination of characters the result is a slightly different form of the individual character. Type set in Marleen Script appears remarkably similar to a text actually handwritten with a pencil.
The characters of Marleen Script have intentionally been digitalized as a bit loose and irregular. Stylistic alternates are available for many of the letters, some even with various alternates to choose from, in order to produce a font with a very lively appearance.. |

Das Original zur Marlen Script schrieb Marleen Baumann aus Augsburg im Frühjahr 2010 mit dem spitzen Bleistift auf rauhem Büttenpapier. Trotz Unregelmäßigkeiten ist diese Schrift ästhetisch. Während die meisten Menschen auf ihre Handschrift keine Mühe verwenden, sieht man der Marleen Script den Willen zu schöner Form an.
Diese Schrift schließt auch noch eine Lücke ganz anderer Art: endlich gibt es eine »typisch weibliche« Schrift. Die schwungvollen Großbuchstaben, die Tendenz zu Schlaufen, die deutliche Neigung nach links, all dies sind häufige Merkmale von »Frauenschriften«. |
The original for Marleen Script was created by Marleen Baumann from Augsburg in the spring of 2010 using a sharp pencil on rough handmade paper. In spite of irregularities, this font is aesthetical. Although most people rarely put forward an effort with their handwriting, in Marleen Script one can see the desire for an attractive form. This typeface also fills a completely different kind of gap: finally, a "typically female" font. Spirited capital letters, the tendency toward loops and the obvious inclination toward the left are all common characteristics of "female scripts." |

Vorraussetzung für die automatische Anwendungung der Ligaturen ist, dass auf ihrem Computer OpenType-Schriften verwendet werden können (Windows XP oder neuer; Macintosh OS X oder neuer), und ihr Programm OpenType-Features unterstützt (z.B. Adobe InDesign CS oder neuer). Natürlich muss die Anwendung von OpenType-Features in ihren Programm-Voreinstellungen aktiviert sein. |
